Some champions win trophies. Others collect championship belts.
In Liverpool, New York, our hometown champion collects trucks.
If you've spent any time around Syracuse or Central New York, chances are you've heard about the infamous Onondaga Lake Parkway Bridge. It's low, it's stubborn, and despite decades of challengers, it has earned a nickname that locals know well:
The Undefeated Heavyweight Champion of Central New York.
And around here, everybody knows who the champ is.

A Little Bridge With a Big Reputation
The railroad bridge on Onondaga Lake Parkway has been standing since 1871. That's right, more than 150 years.
Originally built to carry trains over the Oswego Canal, the bridge eventually found itself above a busy roadway connecting Liverpool and Syracuse.
There's just one problem.
The bridge has a posted clearance of 10 feet, 9 inches.
That's not particularly accommodating for tractor-trailers, box trucks, and other oversized vehicles.
And despite numerous warning signs, flashing lights, and restrictions on large commercial vehicles, drivers have repeatedly attempted to squeeze underneath.
The results haven't always been pretty.
Why Is the Onondaga Lake Parkway Bridge Called Undefeated?
Over the decades, the bridge has developed quite a reputation.
Trucks approach. Drivers misjudge the clearance. And another oversized vehicle meets the reigning champion.
The bridge has inspired countless jokes, social media posts, and local news headlines.
According to a New York State Department of Transportation study, there were 53 bridge-related accidents between 1987 and 2010.
And the incidents didn't stop there.
In 2023, New York State announced additional safety measures after at least six over-height vehicle collisions during the first half of that year.
It's no wonder Central New Yorkers began referring to the bridge as the Undefeated Heavyweight Champion.
Every new collision seems to bring another round of commentary from locals who know the bridge's reputation all too well.
Of course, these crashes are no laughing matter when people are injured or lives are lost. A tragic bus collision in 2010 killed four people, an important reminder that the bridge's height restrictions and safety warnings must always be taken seriously.
But when it comes to the bridge's reputation for outlasting oversized trucks, Central New Yorkers have developed their own brand of hometown humor.
And this old railroad bridge has become an unlikely local celebrity.
The bridge's reputation continues today. In February 2026, New York State announced the completion of additional safety improvements, reporting 11 bridge strikes in 2023, seven in 2024, and eight in 2025.
How Tall Is the Onondaga Lake Parkway Bridge?
One of the most common questions about the bridge is also the most important for drivers.
The posted clearance is 10 feet, 9 inches.
While the physical clearance has been measured higher, drivers must obey the posted restriction.
The New York State Department of Transportation has installed numerous warnings along the parkway, including signs, flashing beacons, road markings, and an electronic over-height detection system.
The message is simple: oversized vehicles don't belong on this stretch of road.
And after all these years, the bridge has given drivers plenty of reasons to believe it.
From Railroad Bridge to Central New York Legend
What makes the Onondaga Lake Parkway Bridge so interesting isn't simply the number of trucks that have hit it.
It's how deeply the story has become part of local culture.
Ask someone from Liverpool or Syracuse about the bridge, and chances are they'll know exactly what you're talking about.
People share photos when another vehicle gets stuck. Local online communities discuss the latest incidents. And the jokes about the bridge's undefeated record continue.
It's become one of those distinctly Central New York references that locals immediately understand.
Some communities have famous statues. Others have historic monuments.
We have a bridge that refuses to lose.
How the Undefeated Bridge Inspired a Witty Wicks Collection
For Witty Wicks owner Aubry, the Onondaga Lake Parkway Bridge isn't simply a local landmark. It's part of growing up in Liverpool.
Having lived in the area, she was well aware of the bridge's reputation. It seemed like every time she turned on the news, another truck had attempted to pass underneath it.
Eventually, someone at Witty Wicks made a joke: "Man, that bridge is undefeated!"
And an idea was born.
Around that same time, Aubry was meeting with Susan to create apparel for the store. They decided to turn their inside joke into a T-shirt celebrating Liverpool's unlikely hometown champion.
They thought it would be funny. Apparently, Central New York agreed.
The shirt took off, and what began as a joke has since grown into an expanding collection of Undefeated apparel.
It's the kind of story we love at Witty Wicks. A little hometown humor turns into something that connects people who know and love Central New York.
