This trust is hereby established and created in the name of David J. Cotter, who died August 14th, 2023, at the age of 37 after a brief illness. David was raised in Marcellus, NY, and graduated from SUNY Potsdam, Crane School of Music, receiving his degree in Music Education. He was employed as a choral teacher at East Syracuse Minoa Schools, the Education Director at Redhouse Arts Center, an Assistant Professor of Theatre at Heidelberg University, and, most recently, the Operations Manager at KJR Consulting.
David was never without a book and always was reading 2-3 books at a time. He read both fiction and non-fiction and was interested in learning about other cultures. His plan was to travel and immerse himself in the places he read about but sadly he wasn't able to continue with that plan. He also was interested in all different types of people and their stories.
He took his love for learning and passed it along to his students. It didn't matter if they were studying in music, theater or something outside his expertise. David was always willing to go that extra mile for all his students. It didn't matter if he was teaching middle school to college he always called them "his kids". He always reminded me that we never know people's story; and/or what they were dealing with in life. Everyone deserves a second chance - and sometimes a third and forth. As long as they tried he was willing to help.
David was an avid theatre artist, Disney lover, and movie fan. He had a love for puppets and a special kinship with Kermit, Figment, and Baby Yoda He was a strong advocate for arts-in-education and the arts as a tool for community transformation.
